09:41 pm - A notable critical style
I'm posting this because on reading "An intimate voice done violence violence by the piano", a review of a performance of Franz Schubert's Die schone Mullerin, I was struck by the drama of the style and felt that it might be worth sharing. Besides a vague sense of unreality, such that one might have if one were dreaming or had taken a sharp blow to the head, I was left asking myself what the writer's choice of style was intended to achieve, and who in fact, it might have been successful in doing so with. My usual questions of what constitutes good criticism and varying tastes don't even come into it since I'm unfamiliar with the piece and its needs, but I don't know that it would help my grasp of the piece if I were.
